Child Development Unit Services
The Child Development Unit primarily guides pregnant mothers in establishing healthy communication and bonding with their baby, helps family members adapt to life with a newborn, and supports siblings in preparing for the arrival of the baby by fostering appropriate attitudes. Based on developmental assessments, the unit sets suitable developmental, behavioral, and educational goals for children and families, whether the child is at risk or developing typically.
For children identified with “Developmental Delay,” a detailed early intervention program is prepared, covering developmental skills, sleep, feeding behaviors, home environment, and communication abilities. The program is implemented or monitored, and when necessary, it provides guidance for referral to special education institutions.
Services Provided by Our Child Development Specialist
Developmental assessments are conducted for children receiving inpatient care in our Child Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery (KVC) services.
Developmental assessments are provided in the child development outpatient clinic for children referred from Child Psychiatry, Pediatric Neurology, Child Cardiology, other outpatient clinics, and various pediatric wards.
On Wednesdays, children visiting the Child Health and Diseases Outpatient Clinic at our Küçükçekmece Neighborhood Polyclinic receive developmental assessments.
Developmental assessments are conducted for children aged 0–18 years, including those who are gifted or have special talents, specific learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities, speech and language delays, visual or hearing impairments, orthopedic, neurological, genetic, metabolic, or psychiatric disorders (e.g., ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders, pervasive developmental disorders).
The unit carries out preparatory and adaptation activities related to the child’s illness, treatment environment, or treatment process. The Child Development Specialist provides “hospital preparatory training” for children undergoing examination or treatment and their families. For inpatient children, activities are planned and implemented to reduce anxiety related to hospital life and support emotional development.
The unit also evaluates school readiness.
Children attending the hospital’s kindergarten are assessed in cognitive, language, motor, behavioral, social, and emotional areas using developmental/psychometric tests, educational scales, and informal methods. Based on assessment results, appropriate developmental, behavioral, and educational goals are set for children and families, whether the child is at risk, has a developmental delay, or is developing typically.
From pregnancy onward, families are provided with consultation services on child development.
